3 Keys to Success in 2023
I swear my feed is full of posts breaking down what a SMART goal is! So, I thought I’d compile my favourite tips for those who want to achieve their goals this year…and enjoy the process (without complicating it).
Consistency over complexity
Achieving your goals is simple, however for some reason we tend to complicate it in our minds. It's easy to get carried away with vision boards, action plans, and focus planners but in its simplest form if you can do a couple of simple tasks consistently over the course of 12-months, you are likely to hit your goal.
Whether you're trying to hit a new PB in the gym, grow your business or drink more water, there are a few simple tasks that these goals can be broken down into to execute frequently and set your well on your way to where you want to be.
One of my goals, for example, is I want to read 15 books this year.
The average book that I read is about 400-pages.
15 book per year x 400-pages per book = 6,000 pages per year
6,000 pages per year ÷ 300-days per year = 20 pages per day
Knowing my reading speed this takes me about 20-minutes.
So if I read for 20-minutes most days of the year (remember I only counted on reading 300 days per year instead of 365 days per year, because realistically I won't make the time every single day without fail), then I'll well and truly reach my goal.
Initially, 15 books per year seems like a pretty lofty task, it is more than I've ever been able to read in a year, but when it's broken down into a much smaller, swallowable piece, it seems much easier.
It's like that old saying, how do you eat an elephant?
One bite at a time.
Fall in love with the process
The behind-the-scenes work is what makes the dream work. Enjoying the journey over the destination is what creates lasting motivation to achieve your goals.
If you're hating every day on the path to achieving your goals, I'm sorry to say that the sweet victory that you think is on it's way...isn't. It's the daily habits, it's the little wins along the way, it's the early mornings and late nights doing what you genuinely enjoy that creates fulfillment in life...not the milestone at the end.
Perhaps this means you need to re-think your goals,
If you're grinding and hustling now but feeling like the motor is just running on fumes and your tank isn't full that's a sign that you're going to run out of puff soon enough and the road to giving up is a much easier one to take than keeping on going. The trick to beating this is to start finding the fun and enjoyment along the way. Think of your life like a movie (stay with me here), if all you saw was the introduction and the conclusion the movie would make no sense, you would feel no connection to the characters in the story, and you would've experienced none of the adventure along the way.
When you focus solely on your end goal, and not the adventue getting there, the same thing happens. The fulfillment comes from the journey, the side quests along the way, and the people who help you get there. It's not all going to be sunshine and daisys but when you reach the conclusion, the story is what you remember.
Aim for 1% better every day
Now, this one is my favourite, the compounding growth of one percent every day over the course of one year is a 37 times return. That's like investing $1,000 into the stock market and withdrawing a house deposit after one year!
This concept is taken straight from one of the all time greatest habit setting and productivity books, Atomic Habits by James Clear.
Seriously, you don't have to jump leaps and bounds every day, you don't need to set records, if you just grow by one percent, you can outperform! Sometimes one percent isn't even noticeable but over the long-term, it will be.
So, there it is! My simple and effective advice to achieving your goals through small actionable steps consistently.
Over the years I too have complicated goal setting and this year I wanted to strip it back to make it as easy as possible to fulfill my goals, hopefully you can take something from this.
I'd love to hear from you, what works best for you, what doesn't work for you, and what you want to achieve in 2023!
